IFR Automotive takes ground-breaking approach to its Aspid sports car

The Aspid Sports car will be unveiled at the British Motor Show which commences in July. Aspid is the result of a 5-year development program by IFR Automotive. The 2-Seater model is similar to Caterham R500 with a difference that Aspid actually has a roof. Aspid has a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine producing 270 hp or 400 hp with a turbocharged version. Aspid wieghs only 700 kg and has the power-to-weight ratio of 1.75 kg/bhp. The car completes the sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and from 0-100 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The performance stats are very impressive. The maximum speed however is restricted to 155 mph.

The Aspid is a new, exciting and technically-advanced luxury sports car, from automotive engineering consultancy IFR Automotive, making its world debut at the British International Motor Show. Very much a drivers car, it offers exceptional performance, agility and style. It is also small, lightweight and ultra compact. 

IFRs luxury two-seater is the result of an uncompromised five-year development programme by a top team of professional automotive engineers who have set out to create a vehicle with distinctive looks, outstanding road holding, the most predictable handling possible, and exceptional levels of performance both on and off the track. 

The extensive engineering has resulted in a highly developed sports car with well resolved vehicle dynamics. Notably, the Aspid delivers its track performance without compromising the ease and reliability with which it can be driven about town and in the countryside. Another desirable quality is that it makes the most efficient use of its available space and is extremely well packaged.

As a technology showcase for demonstrating the companys design and engineering capabilities, the Aspids packed with advanced technical features and patented innovations. The strong immensely stiff chassis, for example, underpins the cars superb dynamic performance and tenacious road holding, while the cars compactness and low mass ensures excellent fuel economy and correspondingly low CO2 emissions. 

The Aspid has been engineered to deliver a high level of driving pleasure, says company founder, managing director and automotive engineer Ignacio Fernndez Rodriquez, whose initials give IFR Automotive its name. It brings a new and unique definition to what a sportscar should be and what it can do. From the outset our aim was to invoke the most intense emotions a car can generate, so the driver can really enjoy it for daily use with high levels of performance available on the track.

The cars design began with no restrictions whatsoever on the positioning of key chassis and suspension components; a three-dimensional geometric void - literally an empty space - was the start point for constructing the car. This unusual approach successfully delivered the optimum linear relationship between all chassis and suspension variables. The driving characteristics are further underpinned by an optimum weight distribution between front and rear axles and a similar optimum polar moment of inertia; all helping to provide the driver with the finest possible driving experience.

The new sports car has an impressive design and engineering pedigree. Formerly with Prodrive, Rodriquez subsequently joined the Mitsubishi World Rally Championship team as race engineer for Alister McRae and Franois Delecour. Rodriquez founded IFR Automotive in 2003 and began work immediately on the new sports car project, while handling confidential car and commercial vehicle assignments from industry clients. 

Rodriquez has recruited a team of highly experienced automotive engineers, many with a similar top level motorsport background. Chief dynamics engineer Breno Oliveira, for example, also worked at Prodrive. The development of the car has also benefited from the input of Sergi Arranz, an experienced motor industry test driver who was previously head of dynamics testing at SEAT.

For the Aspid our aim was to advance the current state-of-the-art particularly in the critical area of steering, handling and road holding, says Rodriquez. We have taken a new approach on vehicle dynamics, including a new construction method for the chassis, as well as developing new brakes and suspension arms. Weve also broken with the tradition that says a long wheelbase, wide track and low ride height is best for performance; our chassis and suspension philosophy ensures the car can also be driven with ease on normal roads.

The electronics too are highly innovative and include a sophisticated interface between the driver and the car; a mere touch of the interactive screen located in the centre console and the Aspid is instantly reprogrammed with a whole new set-up to suit different road and track conditions. But mostly it will be the cars rapid acceleration, cornering poise and equally brisk deceleration that will ensure a memorable driving experience.

The Aspid is the only car in the world to meet both FIA safety requirements and European homologation standards. This means it already has the strength within its main body structure to avoid the need for an additional roll cage; it really can be driven from the road directly onto the race track without the need for any special preparation. And after a hard race the car is robust, durable and safe enough to be driven again on public roads. 

Aspid prototypes feature a 2-litre engine; either naturally aspirated to deliver 270bhp or supercharged to 400bhp. The engines are highly modified by IFR, such that the engine block can be sourced from a number of possible suppliers. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a manual 6-speed gearbox and limited-slip differential.

The lightweight aluminum and carbon structure of the car, which has a mass of just 700kg (1,550lb) and the resulting 570bhp-per-tonne (1.75kg/bhp) power-to-weight ratio gives awe-inspiring acceleration on the track, with the car reaching 62mph (100km/h) in 2.8 seconds and 100mph (160km/h) in 5.9 seconds. 

That, however, is only half the story since the car has equally remarkable braking performance and can stop dead in its tracks from 100mph (160km/h) in 3.0 seconds. When cornering, the car can generate enormous grip and an intense 1.6g of lateral acceleration. Maximum speed is restricted to 155mph (250km/h).

The Aspids natural proving ground for its development includes the notorious mountainous roads used for the main stages of the Catalonia Rally. The mountains are near Reus in northern Spain, where the company is based, close to the coastal cities of Tarragona and Barcelona. Also conveniently nearby are the new vehicle technology park and race circuits of the MotorLand Aragn project now under construction at Alcaiz.

Following its exclusive motor show preview and final testing of the car, journalists will have the opportunity to drive the first production models later this year. With advance orders already taken, a six month lead time for components, and the company aiming initially to build cars at the rate of just one a week, the first customers can expect to take delivery next summer. 

With a long list of options, no two Aspids will be exactly alike. And with each one tailored to the precise needs of each individual customer the anticipated base price of 75,000 (95,000) and upwards for this ultra-exclusive super-quick luxury sports car, which is full of quality bespoke parts, can only serve as an approximate guide. Expect fully loaded models to cost twice as much.

So whats behind the name? Aspid is the Spanish name for the small and very quick snake that killed Cleopatra. It is thought to have been a member of the cobra or viper family and is native to southern Europe. And as we all know vipers and cobras tend to move very quickly.

The Aspid and its main technical innovations will be displayed at the British International Motor Show in London docklands in the north hall (stand N8A) of the ExCel exhibition centre. The show runs from Wednesday 23 July to Sunday 3 August 2008.

Lotus Sport launches in U.S. with two new cars


Lotus Sport, the competition subsidiary of the British marque that produces the lightweight Elise, has been around since 1999. Until now, however, North American customers were left with few options when customizing their Elise for track use. The announcement that Lotus Sport would be now be operating in North America came at the New York Auto Show last week where Lotus debuted a pair of Elises to commemorate the occasion.

The first is the Lotus Sport Exige Cup (shown), a purpose-built track car that does away with such civilized comforts as headlights and air conditioning and adds a supercharger to the Elise’s Toyota-based, Lotus-tuned 1.9L four-cylinder. Power is up to 243 hp in the Exige Cup and makes its way to tarmac through a 6-speed manual and adjustable limited slip diff. 0-60 will occur in a scant 4.1 seconds. Only 15 copies will be made available on this continent at the price of $78,990.

The second car is the Lotus Sport Elise, which slots in between the narrow-minded Exige Cup and the relatively civilized Elise. The Sport Elise is fully street legal but adds adjustable Ohlins dampers and front anti-sway bar, defeatable Lotus Traction Control and a competition clutch. A roll cage and harness bar is also standard equipment. Only 50 examples of the Sport Elise will find their way ashore in the North America and each will carry a price tag of $54,995.

Tata Nano Wins Indian Car of the Year Award

Tata Nano has won the prestigious Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) award. In its fifth year running and modeled along the lines of the American, European and Japanese Car of the Year, the ICOTY award and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) award have been instituted by leading automotive magazines in India, in association with JK Tyre, to bring the auto industry in India at par internationally in recognising their efforts.

Tata NanoThe awards are an expert and independent judgment of all new cars and motorcycles launched in the calendar year in India. An 11-member specialist jury consisting of senior automobile journalists from leading automobile magazines in India got together to vote for the most impressive car and motorcycle on similar parameters to acclaimed international awards for automotive excellence.

After the jury rounds the Tata Nano emerged as the Indian Car of the Year.

The Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr. P.M. Telang, received the award from the Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre Industries Ltd., Dr. R. P. Singhania, at a ceremony in New Delhi on December 20.

This time there was a close contest for the ICOTY award and after all points were tabulated, it was the Tata Nano with 63 points that emerged the victor. Though several vehicles qualified for the 2010 ICOTY, the ten finalists selected by the jury, besides the Tata Nano, were the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Jazz, Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Mahindra Xylo, Skoda Superb, Tata Indigo Manza, and Toyota Fortuner.

The expert jury members of the 2010 ICOTY included Yogendra Pratap and Vikrant Singh of Auto Bild India, Gautam Sen and Bob Rupani of Auto India, Bijoy Kumar Y and Srinivas Krishnan of Business Standard Motoring, Aspi Bhathena of Car India, Sirish Chandran and Bertand D'souza of Overdrive and Vardhan Kondvikar and Girish Karkera of Top Gear India. All these jury members evaluate and test cars as part of their journalistic work and are known for their analytic skills and professional competence. Once a year they come together to vote for the ICOTY.

Ford India has launched another variant of its much popular entry level sedan, the Ford Ikon. The new Ford Ikon Plus comes loaded with state-of-the-art accessories as a comprehensive package enhancing the style and comfort of the vehicle.

Ford India has launched a new variant of its entry-level sedan Ford Ikon priced at Rs 5.77 lacs for the Diesel variant and Rs. 5.17 lacs for the Petrol variant (ex showroom, New Delhi). The new Ford Ikon Plus will be available in both petrol and diesel options and comes 13 inch alloys, rear spoiler, side mouldings, chrome exhaust tip, leather vinyl seats, IPod-compatible MP3 player and remote keyless entry.

''The new variant is a follow up to the terrific response witnessed on the Ikon iKool last year. We believe that the new plus pack is further reinforcement to push the limits to give our customers more style, safety and comfort features,'' said Nigel Wark, executive director, marketing, sales and service, Ford India.

New Ford Ikon Plus is attractive on the outside as it is comfortable inside. The macho exterior is augmented with 13" Hyper silver alloy wheels and chrome on the decklid handle & exhaust trims. Ford Figo Models & Price Officialy Announced

Officially launched the Ford Figo announcing pricing for the much anticipated new compact car.

"Our dealers are excited, customers are waiting and the new Figo is now ready to hit the streets," said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia, Pacific and Africa. "From the start we wanted to offer all the features of a B-Segment car at a Sub-B price. We've accomplished that with Figo."

Four different Ford Figo models - LXI, EXI, ZXI and Titanium - will be available with different trim levels and designed to suit a variety of consumer tastes. All models also will be available with a Duratorq diesel engine option.

Aggressively priced, the new entry-level Ford Figo Duratec LXI, equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, will be priced at Rs. 3,49,900. The entry-level model also can be equipped with a 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine that will be priced at Rs. 4,47,900.

Pricing for the EXI model will start at Rs. 3,81,900 for petrol and Rs. 4,72,900 for diesel variants. The ZXI models are priced at Rs. 3,99,900 for petrol and 4,96,900 for diesel and the top-of-the-line Titanium at Rs. 4,42,900 for petrol and Rs. 5, 29,900* for diesel model. The standard engine for all models is the 1.2-litre Duratec petrol engine. Duratorq 1.4-litre diesel engines are available on all models.

Beginning with an excellent foundation that includes a proven structure and chassis, both interior and exterior styling follows the global kinetic design elements that help harmonise the car with other models in the global Ford lineup.

Modern, sleek styling turns heads:
On the exterior, the tri-plane front end, distinct fenders and a "comet tail" side treatment that starts at the front fenders and carries through the doors into the quarter panels combine to give the car a sporty and aggressive appearance and develop its unique personality. The car's large headlamps have a dynamic shape that helps define the element of speed and agility for the Figo.

The personality that Ford Figo expresses on the outside carries over into the interior of the vehicle.

Inside, a free-flowing instrument panel greets the driver. Seating comfort is enhanced with a design specific for Figo that is all-new and includes fabric seat inserts with a specific bolster and trim pattern.

All models feature a black-themed interior highlighted with red or blue accents. Door panels on the up-level models include cloth inserts with distinctive red colour matching the seat pattern. On ZXI and Titanium models, consumers also will be able to choose a coral red coloured instrument panel option. The bold colour themes are inspired by India's colourful traditions and taste. The Titanium model is extensively equipped and includes Anti lock Braking System and standard driver and passenger airbags.

Other features included on the ZXI and Titanium models include dual-cluster instrument gauges for speedometer and tachometer, vanity mirror for the front seat passenger, power-adjustable rear view mirrors for both passenger and driver. The interior of both models also includes extensive use of bright or polished aluminum trim on the door pull cups, console and around the gauges.

Generous front seat travel, at 210 millimetres, comfortably accommodates nearly every driver.

The rear seat is designed for three adults and can easily fold down to offer generous storage. Combined with the 284 litres of storage capacity in the trunk, Ford Figo has more available storage than any other vehicle in its class.

Among the many standard interior features is a heater and air-conditioning system designed to provide best-in-class performance for a range of temperatures from -10 to 49 degrees Celsius.

Other smart features include Lane Change Indication that flashes indicators three times, eliminating the need to hold the stalk. Hazard deceleration alerts trailing drivers when vehicle speed rapidly decreases. The hazard lamps automatically flash when vehicle speed suddenly decreases to below 96 kilometres per hour.

Ford Figo Features:
Ford Figo offers two fuel-efficient engines for the Indian market. A new 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers 52.44 kW (71.35 PS) @ 6250 rpm and 102 Nm (10.4 kgm) @ 4000 rpm. Ideally geared for Indian traffic, fuel efficiency for the 1.2-litre is 15.6 kilometres per litre. The proven, class-leading 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine also will be available for Figo with outstanding fuel efficiency of 20 kilometres per litre. Horsepower is rated at 50.72 kW (69 PS) @ 4000 rpm. Torque is equally impressive with 160Nm (16.3 kgm) at 2000 rpm.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard equipment on both engines. The clutch has been designed for low effort due to frequent application for shifting in high traffic found in the Indian market.

Zero to 100 kilometres per hour performance is 15.5 seconds for the petrol engine and 15.8 seconds for the diesel variant.

Based on Ford's proven global small car architecture, Ford Figo has been thoroughly tuned for Indian drivers. With the longest wheelbase in the B-car segment at 2489 millimetres, chassis dynamics have been optimized with new steering and suspension components.

The standard power-assist steering system is tuned to require less effort for parking and tight traffic maneuvers and offers precision and agility at higher highway speeds. An anti-lock braking system is offered on the Titanium model.

Service for the new Ford Figo also has been enhanced. Ford India recently announced the opening of 28 new dealerships in India, bringing the total number of Ford outlets to 164 facilities in 97 cities. Nearly 50 facilities feature Quick Service, a new servicing process that is designed to quickly perform routine maintenance in less than 90 minutes.

As part of the initial pricing, all Figo models will be covered with Roadside Assistance for two years. Additional extended warranty plans and total maintenance options will be available to the consumer. Combined with service intervals that are among the longest, and high-durability parts that are competitively priced, Figo is among the leaders with a standard scheduled service plan of five years or 100,000 kilometres.

"Given where the Sub-B segment has traditionally been in terms of content, space and price, we feel Figo will open new opportunities for consumers looking for a better choice," Boneham said. "When you look at all the features, generous interior proportions, styling and fuel efficiency, all Figo models are extensively equipped and truly a bargain at these price points."

Chevrolet Cruze to be Launch on 12th October in India

The premium sedan from Chevrolet Company, Chevrolet Cruze is set to launch in India on 12th October. The car will give a tough competition to Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis.

Chevrolet Cruze IndiaThis new Chevrolet Cruze car is meant for the city roads and highways in India. The car comes with 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 150 bhp and also with 1.8-litre petrol engine producing 130 HP. The diesel variant is expected to be more powerful than the petrol one.

The 138 bhp Honda Civic is already doing well and therefore the petrol variant of Cruze is expected to be more than it, to give a tough competition.

Though there are some negative points as well being a car rather than SUV, but still Cruze was not exactly a failure on the paddy test. The overall package came out to be successful.

Chevrolet Cruze will launch with the price tag of Rs. 12 to 14 lakh for both manual and automatic transmission options. The car will be available in blue, red, white, grey and silver colors.

Chevrolet Spark Electric to Launch on Schedule

Chevrolet Spark Electric IndiaGeneral Motors signed an MoU with Reva Electric last year, to produce electric car models in India. General Motors showcased the Chevrolet Spark

Chevrolet Spark Electric will be available to customers by the end of 2010 or early 2011. The all new Chevrolet Spark Electric would be the first electric four- door car in the country. Speaking on the launch, Reva deputy chairman Chetan Maini said "The GM Chevrolet Spark Electric project is on schedule and we are likely to be ready with a pilot version of the e-Spark by the end of 2010." On the sidelines of the All India Management Association awards in New Delhi, he added, "General Motors will initially produce 5000 units of Chevrolet Spark Electric".

Speaking on the launch, Karl Slym, GM India president & managing director said, "I am sure other models would end up having alternative proportions eventually whether it's the Beat or Chevrolet Volt. It's (e-Spark) not just a test exercise. I can assure there will more and more electric vehicles on the road eventually and we (GM) will have to be amongst that."

In addition to the launch of the Chevrolet Spark Electric, General Motors is also contemplating to upgrade its hatchbacks and sedans to electric platform. GM India Launches Chevrolet Aveo CNG Car in Indian Market

General Motors India today launched the CNG version of its Chevrolet Aveo mid-size sedan at a ceremony presided over by its President and Managing Director Mr. Karl Slym. The Chevrolet Aveo CNG is a bi-fuel vehicle with a full-size petrol tank that is one of the most environmentally friendly cars available in India.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Slym said, "The launch of the Aveo CNG is a testament to the importance that GM India attaches to green technology and environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Its running cost is approximately 54 percent lower than a similar vehicle powered by petrol and 25 percent lower than a similar vehicle powered by diesel. Because of the lower operating economics and the growing number of CNG stations being built across India, this new offering is expected to appeal to both individual and fleet customers. Under normal driving conditions, the Aveo CNG has a range of 180 to 200 kilometres on a full tank of CNG and is BS IV compliant."

The Chevrolet Aveo CNG is equipped with next-generation computer-controlled CNG injection technology from Italy. In an industry first, all "critical to quality" CNG kit components are fitted at the factory - including the CNG injectors, selector switch, modified wiring and suspension - to ensure high-quality and trouble-free service. In addition, the body is reinforced to carry the additional mass of the cylinder. Sequential injection represents the most advanced level of evolution of CNG kit technology. The ECU (Electronic Controller Unit) calculates the opening times of the injectors for each cylinder and acts separately on each gas injector with the highest precision.

New Chevrolet Aveo CNG Car Features include:
1. The sequential injection kit offers precise fuel delivery control through electronic injectors, ensuring efficient combustion.
2. The engine offers stable performance in CNG mode.
3. The Aveo has a CNG-compatible engine. Hardened valve seats and anodized pistons are used in the proven 1.4-litre VGIS (Variable Geometry Intake System) petrol engine. This ensures no engine damage or reliability issues in CNG mode.
4. Minimum service is required owing to the Aveo CNG's advanced electronic operation.
5. The suspension has been reinforced to support the additional mass of the CNG cylinder in the trunk.

GM India engineers have done extensive testing and validation of the Aveo CNG. The Chevrolet Aveo CNG comes with a three-year/100,000-km standard warranty, which is an industry first in the mid-size sedan segment, and a service interval of 5,000 km or six months (whichever comes first). During the run of the Aveo in pure CNG mode will not impact the vehicle warranty.

It may be recalled that the Chevrolet Aveo finished first in its segment in the prestigious J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) two years in a row because of its class-leading quality attributes. It has also been rated best in class in terms of fuel economy by journalists across the country. In addition, the Aveo has won several awards since its introduction.
